SODEC Conducts 16-Day Campaign Against Gender Violence in Marginalized Kumal Settlement of Khandbari Municipality

Khandbari, Sankhuwasabha — As part of the globally recognized 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an impactful community awareness campaign was successfully conducted on Mangsir 15, 2080 (December 1, 2023) in Khandbari Municipality, Ward No. 9. Organised to address social inequities at the grassroots level, the event targeted the marginalized Kumal settlement (Kumal Basti), bringing together 99 local community members—primarily women and key local stakeholders.

Breaking Silence in Underserved Communities

Marginalized and socio-economically backward communities often face heightened risks of gender-based discrimination, domestic violence, and a lack of access to legal recourse due to geographical isolation and limited educational outreach. Recognizing these systemic hurdles, the program served as an inclusive platform to educate, engage, and empower residents.

Key Focus Areas of the Campaign:

  • Identifying Gender-Based Discrimination: Raising awareness on the various forms of gender abuse, including domestic violence, verbal harassment, and economic marginalization.
  • Understanding Legal Rights & Support Channels: Informing participants about legal protections available under Nepali law and highlighting local reporting mechanisms for survivors.
  • Fostering Community Action: Encouraging both men and women to actively challenge harmful traditional practices and build safer, equitable household environments.

Active Community Engagement

The attendance of 99 participants reflects a strong local commitment to ending violence and promoting human rights in rural Sankhuwasabha. Interactive discussions allowed residents to share local challenges, voice concerns, and explore practical solutions for fostering gender equality within their settlement.

SODEC remains dedicated to standing alongside marginalized groups, ensuring that vital advocacy campaigns reach the most vulnerable populations across rural Nepal.
